Daniil Medvedev has an opportunity to pass Carlos Alcaraz and climb to No. 3 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings following Alcaraz’s loss at the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday.

If Medvedev defeats big-hitting Czech Jiri Lehecka in their Thursday quarter-final, he will move ahead of Alcaraz by 50 points. Every point is critical for Medvedev, who will defend 1,000 points in Rome.

PIF ATP Live Rankings

Player  Current Pts  Max Pts after Madrid
 1) Novak Djokovic   9,990  -
 2) Jannik Sinner  8,860  -
 3) Carlos Alcaraz  7,345  -
 4) Daniil Medvedev  7,195  7,995

The 28-year-old Medvedev is 22-5 on the season behind runs to the final at the Australian Open and in Indian Wells. He also made the semi-finals in Miami.

For Alcaraz, a slip to No. 4 would mark his first time being ranked below the Top 3 since the 2022 US Open, where he won his first major title to surge to World No. 1 for the first time.

Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal from Madrid ahead of his quarter-final also impacted the battle for World No. 1 between the Italian and Novak Djokovic. Sinner had an opportunity to pull within 375 points of the Serbian had he lifted the trophy at the Caja Magica.

However, Sinner now trails Djokovic by 1,130 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Djokovic will defend 180 points in Rome compared to 90 for Sinner.

The 22-year-old's big opportunity to reach the pinnacle of the sport will come at Roland Garros, where Djokovic is the defending champion (2,000 points) and he is dropping just 45 points.
