Home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime has withdrawn from the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, the tournament announced on social media Wednesday.
At a career-high No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings, the Canadian was set to make his first appearance since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals. However, the 25-year-old will not compete in his home city Montreal due to a back injury.
“I started having pain Monday. It was quite sudden,” Auger-Aliassime shared in a press conference. “I was training here for two weeks and I had zero problems. So, it happens sometimes. It’s happened for me in the past, it’s just the timing is tough, for it to happen here.
“I was lucky to get an extra day to prepare [because of the rain delays]. I thought day by day things would get better, but I tried to go on court today. I tried to warm up and then I basically couldn’t serve, really. It was impossible for me to think about even competing.”
Auger-Aliassime's opponent Titouan Droguet advances to the third round.
Auger-Aliassime boasts a 30-14 season record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. He won his ninth ATP Tour title in Montpellier in February.
