Champions of the Month: Alcaraz, Sinner shine on clay, grass

Carlos Alcaraz’s third major triumph and Jannik Sinner’s rise to World No. 1 followed by the Italian's maiden grass-court title headlined June’s ATP Tour action.

The Spaniard won back-to-back five setters in the semi-finals and final to win Roland Garros for the first time. Despite Sinner’s loss in the last four, he surpassed Novak Djokovic atop the PIF ATP Rankings. Sinner then strengthened his claim as the World No. 1 by winning his 14th tour-level title in Halle.

Alex de Minaur, sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, continued his quest for a maiden trip to the Nitto ATP Finals by winning in 's-Hertogenbosch. ATPTour.com highlights the six champions from June:

Roland Garros, Paris - Carlos Alcaraz
The 21-year-old captured his first Roland Garros title, becoming the youngest player to earn a major trophy on all three surfaces (2022 US Open, 2023 Wimbledon). It was a marathon effort from Alcaraz, who rallied past Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in a four-hour, 19-minute final. The Murcia native became the first champion at the clay-court major to win a semi-final and final each in five sets since Rod Laver in 1962.

BOSS OPEN, Stuttgart - Jack Draper
Jack Draper earned his maiden ATP Tour crown in Stuttgart, where he defeated two-time champion Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the final. The lefty relied on his hefty serve and aggressive play to go one step further than his previous two tour-level final appearances and become the British No. 1.

Libema Open, ‘s-Hertogenbosch - Alex de Minaur
Competing as the top seed at an ATP Tour event for the first time, Alex de Minaur flawlessly handled any pressure he may have felt. The Australian did not drop a set all week, capping his run with a 6-2, 6-4 final victory against Sebastian Korda. “It achieves a new career-high for me, so that’s always a great little bonus,” said De Minaur, who rose to World No. 7 after winning his second title of the season on the same day his girlfriend Katie Boulter triumphed in Nottingham.

cinch Championships, London - Tommy Paul
Tommy Paul earned the biggest title of his career at the cinch Championships, his maiden ATP 500 trophy and third overall. The 27-year-old defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 7-6(8) in the final, having saved a set point in the second set. "Hearing about the names [of previous winners] in the locker room, it is unbelievable. It was my goal to put my name next to them," said Paul, who became the American No. 1 for the first time after Queen’s.

Terra Wortmann Open, Halle - Jannik Sinner
It was a perfect debut week, though far from easy, as World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings for Sinner. The 22-year-old was pushed to a deciding set in his first three matches, passing each test and later defeating doubles partner Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(8), 7-6(2) in the ATP 500 final. The Italian became the eighth player in PIF ATP Rankings history (since 1973) to claim a trophy in his first tournament as World No. 1.

Mallorca Championships presented by Waterdrop, Mallorca - Alejandro Tabilo
Alejandro Tabilo made history in Mallorca, where he became the first Chilean man to win a grass-court title in the Open Era. The fourth seed downed Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 in the final and cracked the Top 20 for the first time following his second title of the year (Auckland).

Rothesay International, Eastbourne - Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz completed his Eastbourne hat-trick, becoming the first three-time champion in tournament history. The American was unbroken all week at the ATP 250, saving all five break points he faced. Fritz defeated Max Purcell 6-4, 6-3 in the final, adding to his 2019 and 2022 titles on the English south coast.
