In honour of International Women's Day this Friday, ATP Tour stars were asked to describe important or inspiring women in their life. Many of the players selected their mothers, sisters and significant others — including Alex de Minaur, who named girlfriend Katie Boulter — but others picked famous figures they've admired from afar.

With the BNP Paribas Open underway this week in Indian Wells, it was fitting that Frances Tiafoe chose an actress from nearby Hollywood.

"Viola Davis, she's my favorite actress, one of my favorite individuals," he said. "I actually don't know her personally, but I know story, her drive to always keep going. I feel like she's really respected in Hollywood, but really underrated. She's one of the best to ever do it and I love the messages she has in a lot of her movies."

Daniil Medvedev stuck with tennis for his pick: "It's gonna be Maria Sharapova," he replied. "First of all, such a great tennis player. I don't know her too much, but I feel like she has a great energy around her and I like some of the comments she was doing during her career."

Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz may be rivals on the court, but their five Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings pale in comparison to the 22 tour-level matches contested by Sharapova and the Spaniard's selection.

"I'm gonna go for Serena [Williams]," he said. "Everything that she has done in tennis, in life. She came from really humble life and family. It's admirable."
