A number of #NextGenATP stars made their mark in the first week of the 2024 season.
The 18-year-old Shang Juncheng enjoyed a dream week at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open, where he advanced to his maiden tour-level semi-final. The Chinese lefty defeated World No. 16 Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals to earn the biggest win of his career.
Shang, who saved match points in wins against Laslo Djere and Botic van de Zandschulp, is up 42 places to No. 141 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
Frenchman Arthur Fils also performed well in Hong Kong, where he reached the quarter-finals, falling to champion Andrey Rublev. The 19-year-old, who advanced to the title match at the Next Gen ATP Finals in December, beat Borna Gojo and Marc-Andrea Huesler at the ATP 250 hard-court event.
On the ATP Challenger Tour, Jakub Mensik lost in the final to Dominik Koepfer at an event held in Canberra. The 18-year-old Czech, currently No. 143 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, overcame former Next Gen ATP Finals champion Brandon Nakashima in the last four.
