John, a member of the 1981 USTA Junior Davis Cup Team, was assistant
coach of the squad in 1985. John, a 1981 honor graduate of Trinity
University (TX.), took over the head coaching position at his almo mater in
June of 1984. In 1985, his first full season as head coach, he led Trinity
to a 19th place finish nationally. John has always been regarded as one of
tennis' finest sportsmen; in 1980 he won the Rafael Osuna Award for
Sportsmanship, and in 1981 he was awarded the Colonel James H. Bishop Award
and the NCAA Senior Player of the Year Award. He played on the pro circuit,
winning three Grand Prix doubles titles.
