A member of the West German Davis Cup and King's Cup teams in 1983. A
key factor in West Germany advancing to the Davis Cup final in '85. Westphal
roared back from a two-sets-to-love deficit to defeat Czechoslovakian Tomas
Smid in a six hour marathon in front of 10,000 fans and an estimated
television audience of 12 million. Spurred on by Westphal's heroics West
Germany went on to the final without losing a match (5-0)
Westphal began playing a the age of nine and won the European under-16's
Championships in 1980.
Slipped to No. 233 on the ATP computer in 1989, compiling a 5-7 match
record (from No. 116 in '88).
