His father, Alexander, is a doctor and his mother, Ana-Cornelia, is a nurse. His father is Rumanian and mother is German. He was ranked No. 1 in the Rumanian 14s and one year later moved to West Germany. He won the German National Singles title in 1986, the same year he was ranked No. 1 in the 18s. He has represented Germany in European Team Cup play. Compiled a 21-19 match record, earned a career-high $118,406 and ranked No. 88 on the ATP computer in 1988, his second top 100 finish.
