Lost a two-set to one lead against Yannick Noah in the first round of the '88 Lipton International and lost in five sets. Compiled a 7-12 match record, earned a career-high $58,509 and ranked No. 174 on the ATP computer in 1988. Broke into the top 100 for the first time on March 6, 1989 at No. 98 by reaching semifinals at Wellington, Nancy, his first Grand Prix semi. Jumped from No. 91 to a career-high 59 (at time) on July 10, 1989 follow ing his quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon, his best Grand Slam effort.
