Began playing tennis at age eight. Has two younger brothers, Hans, 18, a student, and Wolfgang, 20, who studies architecture in Kaiserslautern. Father, Hans, is an architect, and mother, Lisbeth, is a gym teacher. As a youngster, was a good athlete, competing in handball and athletics. Also played basketball for a first division club in Germany.Studied economics and sport at Erlangen and also took five years of French. Enjoys skiing, soccer and hard rock music. Qualified for his second career tour event in Vienna in October 1992 and upset Andrei Cherkasov and Thomas Buchmayer in three-set matches before los- ing to Andrei Chesnokov in the quarterfinals.
